IT'S MY BOOK BIRTHDAY!

When I first started writing this book in November 2024, all I wanted to do was see if I could finish it. I'd always been that kid who wanted to be a writer, but after being told to grow up and do something practical for a living, I dropped writing and reading for a long time (being a poor student trying to make it through undergrad and then grad school didn't help).
When the pandemic hit, I picked up reading again and was pleasantly surprised to discover fantasy had moved beyond the sword-and-sorcery fare I'd been exposed to as a kid. There was a whole new universe of niches and diverse voices, and I couldn't get enough of it. Before long, I began playing with the idea of writing my own book again.
The inspiration for Alchemists of Dawn came from a phone call I had with my mom. Both of us are women with STEM backgrounds working in male-dominated fields. I forget what I was complaining about - probably some egregious thing some male coworker said - and she responded with some stories of her own. The thing was, this was a woman who'd had a trailblazing career and was on the verge of retirement, and she still had to put up with the same sh*t I did! I felt like there had to be a story here. This book is dedicated to her as a result.
The last 18 months have been a journey of absorbing every writing craft book I could get my hands on, going through WAY too many drafts (I think the final count was 8, not including corrections in the final proof), learning all about indie publishing, working with some AMAZING, skilled professionals to turn it into a finished product, and figuring out how to pitch my book to readers. Is my book a literary masterpiece? Probably not, but it's a fun, engaging read that tackles some issues near and dear to my heart and makes me incredibly proud, and perhaps that's all anyone can ask of their debut novel.
